The 10 best SEO and search tools for checking a brand name
Ten search tools compared for one job: finding out how contested a name is in Google before you commit to it, and tracking your brand's search presence after. Prices checked October 2026.
The 10 best SEO and search tools for checking a brand name
Most SEO tools are built to grow traffic for a site you already have. Naming asks a different question first: when someone types this name into Google, what do they find, and how hard will it be for you to be the answer?
Some tools answer that well. Some only work once you own a verified site. A few are free. Here are ten, with what each is good for and where it falls short.
Prices are as listed on each vendor's site in October 2026, monthly billing unless noted. They change, so check before you buy.
How we ranked them: by how useful each is for brand-name search work (checking a name before launch, then tracking it after), weighed against price and data quality. Disclosure: we make BrandScreen, which is on this list. It's narrower than a full SEO suite, and it's ranked accordingly.
1. Google Search Console
What it is: Google's free dashboard for how your own site performs in Google Search.
Price: Free.
Search Console added a branded-queries filter in late 2025 that splits clicks and impressions into branded and non-branded traffic. The data comes from Google itself, so it shows the misspellings and variants people actually type.
Limitation: It only covers sites you own and verify. It can't tell you anything about a name before launch, or about a competitor.
Best for: Every founder with a live site. Set it up on day one.
2. Ahrefs
What it is: Full SEO suite. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, rank tracking, site audit.
Price: Starter from $29/mo. Core plans from $129/mo (Lite). The free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools covers your own verified site.
Ahrefs has some of the most trusted backlink data available. For a name, Keywords Explorer gives volume and difficulty, and Site Explorer shows how strong the domains ranking for it are.
Limitation: Expensive past Starter. Researching names and competitors needs a paid plan; the free tier only covers sites you own.
Best for: Founders who want the deepest competitive and backlink data.
3. Semrush
What it is: All-in-one SEO, competitor and AI-search visibility platform.
Price: Free plan with daily report limits. Paid from $139/mo. 7-day trial.
Semrush gives volume and difficulty for a name across many countries and shows who owns the results. Its AI Visibility features track how a brand appears in AI answers, which is starting to matter as much as the blue links.
Limitation: The paid entry price is high for an early-stage founder, and the free plan runs out quickly.
Best for: One tool for SEO, competitors and AI-search presence.
4. BrandScreen
What it is: A brand-name screening tool. Search competition is one of five checks it runs on a name, alongside trademarks, domains, business entities and social handles.
Price: Full reports are free. Brand Protect is $49/mo.
For a name you haven't launched yet, a BrandScreen report pulls Google search volume and its month-on-month trend, keyword difficulty, ad competition, the number of indexed results, and the ten sites that currently rank for the name. It doesn't need a verified site, so it works on a name you're only considering.
After launch, Protect tracks the first page for your name every week and reports when a domain enters it, leaves it, or overtakes your own position. Monthly it tracks your Domain Rank, referring domains and organic keywords.
Limitation: It isn't a general SEO suite. There's no site audit, no content tooling and no keyword research beyond the brand term.
Best for: Checking how contested a name is in search before you commit, then watching who shows up on it.
5. Google Trends
What it is: Free tool showing relative search interest over time and by region.
Price: Free.
Google Trends is the fastest way to see whether a candidate name is already tied to something people search for: a band, a game, a seasonal product, a news story. Compare it side by side with existing brands.
Limitation: Values are relative (0 to 100), not search volumes, and low-volume names often show no data at all. "No data" isn't the same as "no competition".
Best for: A free first look at what a name already means to searchers.
6. Google Keyword Planner
What it is: Keyword research tool inside Google Ads.
Price: Free with a Google Ads account.
Keyword Planner gives search volume from Google's own data, plus top-of-page bid estimates. A name with high bids on it is a name advertisers are already paying for.
Limitation: Accounts with little or no ad spend have historically seen volume ranges rather than exact numbers.
Best for: Founders already running, or planning, Google Ads.
7. Moz Pro
What it is: SEO suite with keyword research, rank tracking, link data and Domain Authority.
Price: From $99/mo, or $79/mo billed yearly.
Moz invented Domain Authority, still the most widely recognised shorthand for how strong a site is. Keyword Explorer shows difficulty and the competition on a name's results page.
Limitation: Its link index is generally considered smaller than Ahrefs' or Semrush's.
Best for: An established, simpler suite at a mid-range price.
8. SE Ranking
What it is: SEO platform focused on rank tracking, competitor research and AI search tracking.
Price: From $129/mo. 14-day trial, no card required.
SE Ranking does reliable daily rank tracking for branded keywords and tracks brand presence in AI answers.
Limitation: Its entry price is now close to Ahrefs Lite, so it's no longer the budget option it's often described as.
Best for: Founders who mainly want rank tracking plus AI visibility.
9. Ubersuggest
What it is: Budget keyword and SEO tool from Neil Patel.
Price: Paid plans from $29/mo, with a lifetime option and a 7-day trial.
Ubersuggest is the cheapest way to get volume and difficulty for a name, and the lifetime plan suits founders who don't want another subscription.
Limitation: Its data is shallower than Ahrefs or Semrush.
Best for: Occasional checks on a tight budget.
10. Brand24
What it is: Brand monitoring across social media, news, blogs and forums, with sentiment analysis.
Price: From $199/mo billed yearly. 14-day trial.
Brand24 covers what search tools miss: conversations about your name outside Google. Before launch it shows who else is already using the name in public.
Limitation: It doesn't measure rankings or search volume, so it sits alongside an SEO tool rather than replacing one. It's also expensive for an early-stage company.
Best for: Post-launch founders who need to know when and where their brand is being discussed.
How BrandScreen is different
The tools above are excellent at what they're built for, and if you're running content marketing you'll want one of them. But most of them start from the wrong place for naming.
They need a site, or a subscription. Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools only see sites you've verified. The suites that research any name start at $99 to $139 a month. BrandScreen's full search check runs on a name you haven't registered anything for yet, and it's free.
They look at search alone. A name can be wide open in Google and blocked by a registered trademark in your class, or by an LLC in Delaware. Search is the signal that matters least legally and changes most slowly. BrandScreen puts it next to the trademark, domain, entity and social checks, and the Brand Score weighs all of them together.
They report movement, not events. Rank trackers tell you a domain moved from 4 to 6. A first page reshuffles every week on its own, and that noise teaches you to stop reading. Protect only reports a domain entering or leaving the first page for your name, or overtaking you, and only once the change has held for two weeks.
Use BrandScreen to decide whether the name is worth owning. Once it's yours and you're investing in content, add a full SEO suite.
