The 10 best domain registrars for founders

Ten places to register your startup's domain, compared on what a .com actually costs to renew, free privacy, and who each one suits. Prices checked October 2026.

The 10 best domain registrars for founders

A .com costs the registrar roughly the same wherever you buy it. What changes is the markup, and the markup mostly lives in the renewal.

The first-year price is a promotion. The renewal is what you pay every year after, for as long as the company exists. So that's the number to compare.

Prices below are for a standard .com, as listed on each registrar's site in October 2026, in US dollars and before tax. Registrars change prices and rotate promotions constantly, so check before you buy.

Disclosure: we make BrandScreen, a brand-name screening tool. It isn't a registrar, so it isn't ranked here. When a domain is available, the Buy button in a BrandScreen report goes to Namecheap through an affiliate link, and we earn a commission if you buy. That has no bearing on where Namecheap sits below, and every link in this post goes straight to the vendor.

Before you buy any domain

A registrar will sell you any domain that's free. It won't tell you whether the name behind it is worth owning.

Before you pay for a .com, check the name: whether there's a live trademark on it in your industry, whether a company is already registered under it, and who holds it on the other TLDs. A BrandScreen report does that in about a minute, for free. It checks .com, .ai, .io, .co and .app at once, alongside the USPTO register, business entities in five states, social handles and search competition. For domains that are already taken it shows the registration and expiry dates and the registrar, so you can tell an active business from a parked placeholder.

Then pick a registrar.

1. Cloudflare Registrar

Price: $10.46 first year, $10.46 renewal.

Cloudflare Registrar sells domains at cost, with no markup on registration or renewal. Privacy is free and on by default, DNSSEC is one click, and the domain sits in the same dashboard as Cloudflare's DNS, CDN and SSL.

Limitation: Domains must use Cloudflare's nameservers. If you want DNS elsewhere, you have to transfer away.

Best for: Technical founders already on Cloudflare who want the lowest long-term cost.

2. Porkbun

Price: $11.08 first year, $11.08 renewal.

Porkbun charges the same in year one as in every year after, with no bait pricing. Privacy and SSL are free, the interface is clean, and prices on startup TLDs like .io and .co are good.

Limitation: A smaller company. No phone support and no enterprise portfolio tools.

Best for: Most founders. A fair price without being tied to an infrastructure provider.

3. Spaceship

Price: $8.88 first year, $9.98 renewal, plus the $0.20 ICANN fee.

Spaceship is a newer registrar from the founder of Namecheap, with one of the lowest .com renewals anywhere and a fast, modern dashboard. Privacy is free on eligible domains.

Limitation: It's been operating since 2022, so it has a shorter track record than the others.

Best for: Price-conscious founders who want a modern interface.

4. Namecheap

Price: $10.98 first year on promotion (normally $14.98), $18.48 renewal.

Namecheap is one of the largest budget registrars, with free privacy for life on eligible domains, free DNSSEC and 24/7 chat support. It also sells hosting, email and SSL if you want everything in one place.

Limitation: The renewal is well above the first-year price, and checkout offers a lot of add-ons.

Best for: A mainstream all-rounder with real support. Note the renewal price.

5. Dynadot

Price: $10.88 first year, $10.88 renewal.

Dynadot has a low, flat renewal and free privacy on every domain. It also runs an aftermarket and expired-domain auctions, which is useful when the name you want is already registered.

Limitation: The interface is dense next to Porkbun or Spaceship.

Best for: Founders hunting for an expired or aftermarket .com, or managing many domains.

6. Squarespace Domains

Price: $10 first year, around $20 renewal, tax and fees included.

Squarespace Domains took over Google Domains customers in 2023 and works without a Squarespace website. Pricing is all-in, and SSL, DNSSEC and email forwarding are free.

Limitation: The renewal is roughly double Cloudflare's or Spaceship's.

Best for: Non-technical founders, Squarespace sites, and former Google Domains users.

7. Hover

Price: $18.99 first year, $18.99 renewal.

Hover sells domains and email and nothing else, so there's no hosting upsell. Privacy is free on supported domains, and its human support is well regarded.

Limitation: Expensive. The renewal is nearly double the budget registrars'.

Best for: Founders who value simplicity and support over price.

8. Name.com

Price: $12.99 first year, $19.99 renewal.

Name.com has a well-regarded REST API and a wide range of TLDs, with free privacy on eligible domains.

Limitation: The renewal is high, and steep first-year promotions on some newer TLDs renew at many times the introductory price.

Best for: Developers automating domain management through an API.

9. GoDaddy

Price: $0.01 first year with a 3-year purchase, $22.99 renewal.

GoDaddy is the largest registrar, with 24/7 phone support, a full small-business suite and a large aftermarket and brokerage service.

Limitation: The highest renewal on this list, the headline price needs a three-year commitment, and checkout leans hard on upsells.

Best for: Founders who want phone support and everything in one place, and accept the price.

10. Gandi

Price: $11.00 first year, $38.38 renewal.

Gandi is a long-established European registrar with a strong reputation for reliability and a clear stance on privacy. Since its 2023 acquisition it has dropped the free mailboxes it used to include and raised its prices.

Limitation: The highest .com renewal on this list by a wide margin, more than three times Cloudflare's.

Best for: Founders who specifically want an EU-based registrar and accept the price.

How BrandScreen is different

Every registrar above answers one question: is this exact domain available, and what does it cost? That's the last question in naming, not the first.

It checks the name, not just the domain. A registrar will happily sell you a .com for a name that's already a registered trademark in your industry. BrandScreen checks the trademark register, state entity filings, social handles and search competition at the same time, and the Brand Score tells you whether the name is worth owning.

It explains the taken domains. A registrar's search just says "taken" and suggests alternatives. BrandScreen shows when a taken domain was registered, when it expires and who the registrar is: often the difference between a dead end and a negotiation.

It watches after you buy. A registrar emails you before your own renewal. Protect also tells you when someone registers your name on a TLD you're tracking, which no registrar will do, because it's not their domain.

Screen the name with BrandScreen, register with whichever registrar above fits how you work, and let Protect watch the rest.
